Directional Drills

Directional drilling is also known by other names such as directional boring, slant drilling, horizontal drilling, deviated drilling and is a common method used as part of trenchless technology.

Use of directional drilling

In practical fields such as oil & gas sector, such directional drilling consists of drilling of wells through gas & oil bearing rocks from different angles but the well hole is vertical. Directional drilling also finds its use in conduits & utility pipeline installations. The work involves drilling of pilot borehole in a fixed bore path with least disturbance.

It is primarily used to make crossings under roads, existing structures and roads with the goal of installation of conduits & pipes for transportation of different kinds of materials and fluids. This method is ideal if you are looking to minimize damage to existing constructions and structures.

Benefits

Some of the benefits of using directional drilling include:

  1. Lesser soil disturbance.
  2. Reduction in fractures to present rock formations.
  3. Less contamination of ground water sources.
  4. Reduction in shoring & excavation costs.
  5. Limited disruption of landscape & traffic.
  6. Possibility to drill under surface blockages & ongoing construction site operations.
  7. Drilling into any reservoir where it is difficult to gain vertical access such as an oil field beneath a town or lake.
  8. Capability to group more wellheads together on a single surface location.

Many purchase used directional drilling equipment as a cost effective alternative to purchasing new ones. Underground utility firms and construction contractors are quite familiar with this equipment & frequently utilize these  in place of open-cut constructions for installation of utilities.

How it works

After a horizontal location is marked & existing utilities are traced and their depth is determined at fixed intervals along the path of the drill, the directional drilling starts with tracking of the drill head using electromagnetic fields by an experienced operator to move it around existing utilities.

Many of the popular brands have used directional drilling for sale and that too for affordable prices. Some such brands include; Vermeer, Ditch-Witch, American Auger, Tesmec, CASE, Atlas Copco, Sharewell, Melfred Borzall, Tri Flo, Vac-Tron, Tulsa, Ring -O- Matic & Astec.
