A compactor and roller sometimes also called as road roller is one type of vehicle that is used for compacting gravel, concrete, soil and asphalt at road construction sites. These compactors & rollers are also used in agriculture and landfill zones.

Types of compactors

As one of the heavy construction equipments, compactors are normally of 3 types;

Plate compactor: It has vibrating baseplate and is utilized for creation of level grade. Another variant of the plate compactor called jumping jack finds use in backfill of narrow trenches.
Road roller: The compactors of road roller type help in compaction of crushed rock that is underneath stone foundations or slabs.
Vibrating roller: Road roller are also of vibrating roller type with sizes varying from pedestrian ones to self propelled one which can weigh close to twenty tons.

Compactors are generally hydraulic powered and can be of different shapes. At landfills a compactor is in the form of bulldozer having spiked wheels and is driven over deposited waste. At many places the waste collection vehicles has built in compactors as sliding plates which are hydraulically powered.

Other types of compactors are used in industries such as processing of scrap material, with most common one coming to mind being car crushers. These are of 2 types, one pancake type where the material is pressed from top by a large plate that is hydraulically powered. The other one is known as the bailing press where the car gets compressed from different directions till it looks like one large cube.

Rollers

Rollers or Road Rollers use vehicle’s weight to compress the surface or material beneath it. The compaction can be performed by double or single drums or by use of roller having pneumatic tyres.

Types

Rollers can range from simple drum ones that are easily hand operated and weigh about 100 pounds to one which weight up to 20 tonnes. On many rollers the drums are also water filled to increase the weight of the machine. Other common types include:
